Countries eligible for Visa-exempt entry
The nationals of the following countries are eligible for the visa exemption program, which permits a duration of stay up to 90 days: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, U.K., U.S.A. and Vatican City State.
- A passport with validity of at least six months upon entry.
- Japanese passport holders with their passports valid for more than 3 months are eligible for visa-exempt entry.
- US passport holders with their passports valid for the period of intended stay are eligible for visa-exempt entry.

The local currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (NT$; currency code: TWD). Bill denominations commonly used are NT$1000, NT$500 and NT$100. Coin denominations are NT$1, NT$5, NT$10 and NT$50. The current exchange rate is approximately NT$30 to one US Dollar. Foreign currencies can be exchanged at airports and a number of government-authorized banks and hotels. Major credit cards (Master, VISA) are widely accepted at tourist-oriented stores and hotels.

Taxi: Taxi rate in Taipei city is NT$70 for the first 1.25 kilometers and NT$5 for each additional 250 meters. There is a "waiting surcharge" of NT$5 for each 1 minute and 40 seconds when the taxi is idled. In addition, NT$20 surcharge is added to fares between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Out-of-town or long-distance travel may be arranged for a fixed fee.

Office hours for government agencies are generally from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm and banking hours are from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday. Most stores remain open until late hours both on weekdays and weekends. There are plenty of 24-hour convenience stores in the city.
